Riverkit awoke to the sound of crunching snow. Stonekit, Whiteshadow, Brightsong, and Hawkkit's minds were silent. Flamekit's was whiring. Riverkit jumped up and looked around, Flamekit was gone all right. His tracks lead out of camp. Riverkit matched her paw steps with his. She followed him past the Blossom Tree and into a deep part of forest. "Reeoow!" She heard a shriek. Riverkit rushed towards the sound. Flamekit was cornered by a hungry Badger! She hissed and leaped at the thing with her little claws unsheathed. Left, Right, Dodge, Twist! She read and counteracted each movement. The Badger thought this was too much trouble for a scrawny meal and crashed away through the undergrowth. Shadowfang, Tallfur, and Wildblaze appeared just then. "What happened!" Shadowfang mewed sternly. "I...It was my fault...I went to look for my mother and a badger trapped me and Riverkit just came to help me." Flamekit stuttered. Wildblaze stood behind Shadowfang and Tallfur with a look of amusement in her eyes, the only one to realize that Riverkit was more special than they knew."A badger!....Tallfur, go and tell Dawnstar what has happened here..."shadowfang said. Tallfur nodded and ran off. Shadowfang and Wildblaze inspected the kits, but to Shadowfang's surprise, they had no injuries. As they walked back to camp, Riverkit thought "Shadowfang's too shocked to even punish us for leaving camp!" A few days later Riverkit stood beside Stonekit, Hawkkit, and Flamekit, ready for Dawnstar's announcement. She was excited and almost nervous. Today, she would be apprenticed!
